~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Our lives are filled with the stuff of adults.
We live our days attached to family, friends, communities, jobs and a mixed bag of responsibilities. The weeks go by and we rush through our days, trying to find time to quieten our minds and fill up on a little bit of something for us, whether it be a walk, reading a book or a long hot bubble bath away from the demands of everyone else.
From an early age, we somehow picked up the idea that as women, we were here to take care of everyone else. This way of thinking often became the way we measured our self worth because we thought that if we looked after everyone else, we would deserve to be loved and accepted.
And there is nothing wrong with that except that we do have to make ourselves a priority along with everyone else. Taking care of "you" is the most important thing we can do for others, for if we neglect our needs, you can be sure that eventually you are going to find your self frustrated, angry, exhausted and possibly even sick and then you won't be able to look after anyone else.
While reading this, you are most likely agreeing with me and thinking of a deep and delicious peaceful hot bath. You so need it right? But not right now because you have your "to do list" to complete first.
Forget about that for a minute...
Here is a simple exercise to do right now!
Close your eyes and go back to your childhood.
Remember something fun that you used to love to do.
Remember playing with something or pretending to be someone.
Remember the doll, book, bike, crayons and paper airplanes.
Remember the game of checkers and hopscotch.
Remember the dress up clothes and playing Snakes and Ladders
Remember the friends and laughter.
What a shame that you forgot those things.
Well here is a friendly reminder...
Go play... go sing a song, dance, bang the drum, draw a picture or read your favourite childhood story book again. Don't have that book with you anymore, then find it online and order a new one for yourself. You will love it even more now as an adult.
Forget about being an adult for a little while and run away all by yourself and learn how to play again!
