Everyone has an excuse as to why they have not done something. Excuses are lies we tell ourselves to avoid doing what we fear. Maybe it is because we don't know how to start something and so we distract ourselves with other things. Maybe it is because we think that whatever we want to do will have to be perfect and since we don't know how, we avoid the disappointment by doing nothing. We really want to start something but we get lost in a self defeating pattern of excuses. It is often a fear of judgement or rejection that stops us from starting.
The result is that you live your life, having no control over the things that you really want to do or have. Fear keeps you frozen and so you learn to make excuses to avoid that uncertain, uncomfortable feeling. Instead of doing, we build up a thousand and one excuses as to why we can't eat better, exercise more, follow our passion or take that trip. To feel better, we become judgemental and turn our lack of action into gossip and criticizing others. We think that it makes us look superior.
If we don't master our fears of change, we stay stuck and accept that it is just the way things are in life. We remain in our messy life and learn to make more excuses and we fool ourselves into wasting our precious time. The truth is we will always have some thing to fear. It is part of life... but we have to push through that scary barrier and take small steps each day to reach out to what we know is waiting for us.
Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.
